About Me

My photo
Our adventure started on a beautiful June day in 2004. Fast forward 12 years and now we are the proud parents of 3 active, beautiful boys. Nathan, Bracken, and Marco. We call Prescott Valley, Arizona home and are constantly reminded that there is never enough time to accomplish and experience everything we think we want. Life with a young family is precious and simplicity is our ongoing quest.

Our BIG Adventure Begins

July 2014

Our single most important goal for this summer was to finally begin Project Third Bedroom.  When we purchased our home Nathan was 1 1/2 years old and we had just come from living in my parents basement and before that a tiny 1 bedroom apartment in Flagstaff.  So our 2 bedroom 1400 sq/ft house felt huge!  Over the last 6 years our family has grown in number and size and sometimes the walls feel like they are closing in.

We took the matter into our own hands this summer after several months of planning and picking the brains of every person we know with more construction based experience and knowledge than us.  We also watched a LOT of YouTube videos!

First step, cutting back the carpet to begin putting up the frame for the new wall.  It was fun and scary at the same time.  Once we did it there was no turning back.  In fact Curtis did most of it late one night while I was sleeping.  I woke up one morning to find our living room disheveled, my carpet sliced in two, and a completely installed base plate board.  I new right then I had to sink or swim!  I spent the day trying to make sense of chaos, pack away unnecessary items and move out every piece of furniture that wasn't essential.  It took me a few weeks to slowly clear off our kitchen table, which had become the catch all place for our belongings in transition, while I found new homes for everything not boxed up.

Step two, cut out and remove the drywall and framing in the hall closet area.  This is when the real mess began.  Anything dealing with drywall is a messy business.  Curtis and the boys cut, hacked, sawed and ripped to their hearts content.  We had to gut the hall linen and coat closets to modify it for a bedroom door.  Luckily Curtis designed it in such a way we can still have a linen closet but I had to say goodbye to the coat closet.

We had to keep a really close eye on Bracken and an even closer eye on Marco with the various cutting and power tools we had to keep around.  Marco was obsessed with "Papi's drywall" and on more than one occasion I found him hiding in the "drywall" (that's what he calls the new room) trying to cut the walls with whatever tool or nail clippers/file that he could get his hands on.  Luckily he only created minor damage that was easily covered up and hidden later down the line.  Little stinker!

I thought I'd never see the day when Curtis hauled our trash bin into the house, but we have experienced many firsts with this project.  However, this was NOT repeated again during the process.

When your trash bin lives outside you don't really notice the aroma that naturally lingers around it but when you bring it into your living room the stench is undeniable.  Nathan appointed himself as the official fragrance sprayer and he kept things bearable.

Thankfully Curtis decided that hauling a very heavy trash bin in and out of the house wasn't enjoyable so he kept the trash bin on the front porch and employed the boys in hauling the remodeling waste out the front door.

Life after our first big step into our home remodel hasn't always been easy, in fact for me it has been very challenging.  I don't deal well in choas but I've had to find ways to manage.  I keep telling myself it will all be worth it in the end.  I like things clean and tidy and I have struggled with keeping the dust and debri at bay.  Thankfully we have a great vacuum and shop vac that have been seeing lots of action.  I also have wiping down our kitchen, dining room and living room down to a science.

Unfortunately, we did not complete this project before school began and Curtis had to return to full time work.  The next steps and progress with be very slow.

Let the good times roll!

Bluth Reunion

Gayle and Ora Bluth Family Reunion
Sacramento Mountain Retreat

Tomalada - Yummy!

Since our last reunion 2 years ago our family has lost a few dear people, Grandpa Bluth and Uncle Andre.  We missed them and felt their absence but it was reassuring and comforting to gather together, see how each family has grown, visit and reminisce, and strengthen one another.

Our sweet Grandma Bluth, shared her words of wisdom and advice along with many wonderful memories and stories.

As always we enjoyed plenty of outdoor fun and recreation.  Curtis and I organized a field day event and I think it turned out well.  We played all the usual games, races and relays and each participant was able to win trophies, medals and trinkets.  We encouraged all ages to participate and we even had a few races were dads, mom, grandmas and grandpas races with and against the kids.  We all had a blast!

It wouldn't be a Bluth reunion without the constant traffic of plasma cars and scooters.  It keeps the kids occupied and uses up all their energy so they sleep great at night but you take your life in your hands walking up or down the side walk.  Little Marco had a difficult time snatching a turn on the plasma cars with a long line of older, much quicker kids waiting around.  So Papi perfected the art of sitting and riding on his ripstick and Marco loved it!

Play hard, sleep hard!

Great-Grandma Bluth & Great-Grand Kids

On our way home we had our traditional pit stop at Caliche's with my family to enjoy Mango Dangos (vanilla custard with mangos and slated pecans) before we all hit the road and went our separate ways.  Till next time!

Fourth of July

Our Fourth of July celebrations began with a fun evening enjoying a delicious BBQ in our backyard with family.  Grandma and Grandpa Kleinman, Uncle Tim, Tio Kendal, Andy, Bekah, Ava, Jaxon, Eden and little Taft all came over for the festivities.  Everyone pitched in with the food and it was delicious.  The evening was beautiful and the kids enjoyed playing together while the adults visited. When it was time for the fireworks show we moved the party to the front yard, busted out the glow sticks, fireworks cookies aka Oreos, and our traditional fruit pizza.  The fireworks show was spectacular and the perfect finale to a memorable Fourth of July.

Saturday morning we headed out the door with Tio Kendal for Downtown Prescott to enjoy the tail end of the parade and catch the annual Boot Races.  Nathan and Bracken had their hearts set on racing this year since we missed out last year.  But alas the Boot Races were yet again not in the stars for our little boys.  We enjoyed chatting with some good friends that we bump into a few times a year and about 15 minutes of the parade before the clouds opened up and giant drops of rain started to fall.  We held out for a while thinking that the rain would let up and the show would continue but the rain kept coming down.  It rained so hard that within 20 minutes the gutters along the streets were gushing with mini rivers.  We tried to camp out underneath the low branches of a pine tree and it worked for a little while.  We kept the boys distracted with snacks, but eventually they started shivering and not even Oreo cookies kept their minds off our interesting situation.  When Marco bailed from his stroller to snuggle with Mommy we decided it was time to call it quits.  We were already soaked so we might as well make our way back to our car.  At one point we almost lost Bracken in the raging gutter rivers.  As we were crossing the street Bracken, who had his arms inside his shirt for added warmth, lost his footing in the current and went down.  Luckily Tio Kendal grabbed him before he went down the drain.  It was alarming and hilarious at the same time, poor little guy.

Once we were all safely across the street we took cover under the porch of a bed and breakfast while Curtis went to fetch the car.  Our morning did NOT go as planned but in the end it turned out to be a special little adventure that we'll always remember.

We spent our afternoon enjoying ice cream and fried cheese curds from Culver's, tortas Cubana from The Donut Hole and watching movies while snuggling in warm, dry quilts.

Maybe we'll make the Boot Races next year.

Front Yard Makeover, Rainbows, and Tres Captain Underpants

So back in May we had jumped on an impulse idea and ripped up our front yard.  Curtis dug out some really unattractive yellow bushes along the front of the house (yellow houses don't need yellow bushes), he moved out the rock and we prepped it for more artificial turf.  We love the stuff.

We worked hard every weekend in May to have it mostly done before we left for Legoland and then spent a good part of June finishing it up.

Now we have a new and improved front yard with beautiful rose bushes and flowers instead of nasty bushes and a little patch of green heaven to play on.

This particular evening Curtis was outside watering some plants when he noticed the rainbow.  I was inside trying to get the boys ready for bed and around here the boys sleep in their undies during the summer.  So when Papi hollered to come see the arco iris they all sprinted for the front yard without a second thought about being in their underwear!

It was a spontaneous and beautiful evening!

All Creatures of Our God and King

It has been a really long time since I have truly learned a solo piano piece and my first ever piano solo for a Sacrament Meeting musical number.  I might have played one in sacrament meeting when I was 13 or 14 because I have memories of practicing a nice arrangement of I Am a Child of God but I have no memory of performing it.  In any case it's been a really long time.  I play the piano frequently for church in some way or another, but it's always as the accompanist for other performances.  I love to accompany because it allows me to play some really beautiful and sometimes challenging music with practically zero pressure.

It felt good to really play again.  The song wasn't too challenging so I could learn it well in a few weeks with semi-regular practicing, but challenging enough that I enjoyed applying myself and it made for a nice performance song.

I tried to get a good recording of me playing but it proved to be a bigger challenge than I expected.  Between camera issues, children interference and good old fashion flubs this turned out to be the best take.  It's not perfect, there are several glaring mistakes that make me cringe, but oh well.  The actual performance went really well, almost flawless, so that's what matters I guess.

FHE at Fain Park

June 30, 2014

For Family Home Evening we decided to shake things up and enjoy a picnic dinner and some exploring at Fain Park.  Our boys are always up for FHE activities, in fact they would much rather have an activity every week and bypass the lessons altogether.  With these three hooligans Family Home Evening at our home is filled with plenty of rambunctious behavior so we keep the lessons short and sweet.

We had an ambitious summer.  Curtis worked more than ever, we had a few trips and reunions planned, and major home improvement projects so a break from the usual FHE struggle was extremely refreshing.  And I loved that I had very few dinner dishes waiting for me when we got home!
