Randomness
Today during lunch Nathan was talking a lot like usual, and he was going on and on about how cotton candy is so amazing because it actually doesn't go into your tummy but disapears in your spit. I was tyring to be an attentive audience while I ate my lunch, but I was really only listening to about a third of what he said. Then out of the blue he looked at me with an extremely serious expression and asked "Mom, are we upside down on the bottom of the Earth right now?" Talk about catching me off guard! My response: "I don't know, we might be at the bottom of the Earth right now or we might be at the very top or even on the side sticking out sideways." That made him giggle!

Sunday Nap
What better place to relax than on top of Dad, while he is passed out on the couch?
The best part is Curtis didn't even remember sleeping with a pillow on top of his face. He had no clue that Bracken had settled in on top of him.

Monster Jam!!!!!!!
Curtis and Nathan had the time of their lives enjoying a guys night out with all the Kleinman dudes.
They lived it up with 3 full hours of monster truck MADNESS!
The little guys in our family are CRAZY about monster trucks. With 7 little boy cousins we have monster truck shirts, games, movies and toys coming out our ears so attending Monster Jam was a dream come true
Among our brood Grave Digger is by far the most popular monster truck.
Nathan's commentary: "Grave Digger was saved from a crash by hitting the wall and landing on his wheels!"
"Grave Digger is the highest jumper ever! He does rare airs!"
Nathan wore these ear muffs for the first little bit of the show because he tends to be sensitive to loud noises, as in they kind of scare him. But he eventually took them off and he decided he didn't mind the noise afterall. He attributes it to being almost 5 years old.
Chase Field was packed! The show was sold out! Curtis was glad he didn't take Bracken, because he is pretty sure he would have lost him at some point in the mayhem.
All the little dudes got these Grave Digger hats stuffed with cotton candy. Nathan snapped this photo of Curtis trying one on and he is very proud of his photography skills.
Curtis and Nathan got home a little before 1am, and Nathan was exhausted and disoriented from sleeping in the car. He was crying as Curtis carried him into the house. I quickly took over and tried to calm him down asking him why he was crying. Nathan looked at me and said "I'm sad because I want to see more monster trucks! I don't want it to be over!" I think he liked his first Kleinman Guys Night Out.

Warm Winter
Since I busted my ankle, life at our house has been very simple and all the extra activities were put on hold. Our winter has been quite warm so I figured it was high time we ventured out to a park again. We packed our lunch and scooters and the boys had a grand time running, playing, sliding and climbing. I thoroughly enjoyed getting some sun again while I relaxed on a park bench and read a book. It was well worth the effort.

Return of the Bubble Bath
Bracken loved his first post-cast bath. He bathed for 30 minutes, till the water was cold and all the bubbles were gone.

Wunchiche
Bracken LOVES sandwiches, which he calls "wunchiche" (you have to pronounce it in Spanish) it is his way of saying our familiy spanglish word sandwiche. He loves all kinds of sandwiches but peanut butter and honey is one of his favorites. He also really enjoys his cheese and crackers wunchiches.
I'm not sure how it got started but one day I noticed him making little sandwiches out of his crackers and cheese snack, and now he does it every time. He very patiently places 2 little cheese cirlces (I slice up a string cheese for him) on one cracker and tops it with another to create his sandwhich.
Then he tries to fit the whole thing in his mouth, but most of the time he decides that biting it in half is a better idea.
I love to watch his chubby little fingers build his cracker sandwiches. It won't be long before he loses the toddler chub so I am enjoying it while I can.
Yeah for yummy snacks!

Black Widow Dude
Nathan was grounded from TV & computer time for 3 days this week. He thinks he can get away with not flushing the toilet and when I called him on it he through a fit and quickly racked up 3 days on his sentence. At first he moped around the house because he couldn't think of anything fun to do, but eventually he settled down and realized that playing is much better than moping.
While Bracken watched a show, Nathan transformed into Black Widow and we had "bad spider man" lurking all over the house. He only tried to sneek a peek at the TV a few times. Mostly he was a dark blur of stealthy action leaping, jumping and hiding all over the house.

One Down
Bracken got his cast off today! The nurses were very impressed that he didn't cry when they sawed it off. He was a bit intimidated by the saw at first but relaxed when he realized it wasn't going to hurt him.
They took another x-ray of his ankle and everything has healed up beatifully. The doctor did say we should keep him from attempting crazy stunts for a few days while his bones adjust to not having the cast on. After we left the doctor, we headed to the store to buy him some new bubble bath. Luckily I remembered to bring along his matching shoe and sock, or else he would have had to wear his sandal a little bit longer. We are celebrating the cast removal with a long, warm bubble bath for Bracky. His skin is very dry and flaky, and his foot smells really sour so a good soak is well over due.
Bracken is very happy to be cast free! And he didn't mind the endless supply of suckers and stickers that the nurses were offering him for his bravery. Life's sweet when you are little.

It's official...
...our family has a weakness and it lies in our ankles. In fact Curtis jokes with people that he feels the need to wear an ankle brace just to go to the bathroom.
Bracken had his appointment today with the orthopedic specialist and he confirmed that Bracken has a buckle fracture at the base of his tibia. Normally with an adult they would suggest a brase and light activity for 2-3 weeks, but with an active 2 year old we decided to go with a cast, since "light activity" is not in this little guys vocabulary. He has to wear the cast for 2 weeks and then he'll be as good as new. The hardest part was keeping him off the cast for the first 6 hours so the cast could set. Luckily Grandma Kleinman was with me so she could carry Bracky all over.
When the doctor asked Bracken what color he wanted for his cast, Bracken started listing all the colors he could think of. To narrow it down the doctor asked him "Do you want green like a dinosaur, or purple like Barney?" Bracken replied "Barney!" So now he and I are matchy matchy purple squared. And we have some lovely foot wear to boot!

Life of An Invalid
These last 3 1/2 weeks have been extremely trying for me. The first few days of laying/sitting around holding my ankle still, were bearable and even slightly relaxing, inspite of my throbbing ankle. But that got old REALLY fast. I can't even begin to explain how frustrating and torturing it is to be held captive to an accidental injury that rendures you completely helpless. I like to work and I work hard to keep my home and family in order. My sweet husband did his best at taking over all of my duties, but he doesn't have the same expectations that I have so things were falling through the cracks. There were times when I would hobble around the house on my crutches and notice a hundred little tasks being overlooked that needed done, and I would try to convice myself that it was fine, they weren't crucial to the welfare of our children. But they would nag at me till I couldn't handle it any more and I would break down in tears of frustration from being forced to let go. I finally had all the time in the world, but I couldn't do anything that required the use of 2 legs and 2 arms.
An even more difficult adjustment, was getting used to missing my children even though they were around. The week before my surgery and the week after, I pretty much stayed in my room propped up on my bed. I could hear my family going about their day, eating their meals, going in and out of the house, playing, watching movies, but I wasn't a part of it. I didn't realize how much I would miss fixing breakfast for Bracken at 6am or tying Nathan's shoes. I couldn't be their mommy in a normal everyday way and that was really hard. Eventually, as my injury started to heal, I felt up to spending my day on the couch and sitting at the table for some of my meals which helped a lot. I have always loved watching my children play, but it has meant a lot more to me recently.
This latest week has been the most emotionally trying for me. Curtis needed to spend most of his time preparing for the upcoming semester since he had to devote all his time to caring for me and the kids for the first half of his Christmas break. My mother came down for the week after my surgery which allowed me to relax more with our family and home in her capable hands. She even put away all my Christmas decorations. But she had some obligations that required her presence in Idaho so she took the boys back with her since I couldn't care for them and Curtis needed to focus on his job. They had a blast playing with their Aunts and being adored by Grandparents but I had 4 very long and lonely days. I knew I would miss my kids, but missing them combined with all the other mounting frustrations of my situation, was almost more than I could bare. I cried a lot and watched a lot of movies.
I am now on my 4th week of living as an invalid and things are starting to look up. I was cleared for a walking cast on Monday, and I have instructions to slowly work up to putting my full weight on my foot over this next week. Though seeing what my foot and ankle look like after surgery, was shocking. They were shapless and hideous and I didn't expect my incisions to be so long and full of awful staples. I still have a long way to go till I am back to normal but I was able to stand straight on, facing the mirror to comb my hair this morning, and it felt good. I have even been able to sleep on my sides again which has been amazing. Being pregnant with a broken ankle has made things slightly more difficult. I have had to sleep propped up (since I can't sleep on my back right now) with my leg elevated and still for 3 weeks. It was getting rough, my body was aching in places I have never ached before simply from the lack of variety in positions and movments. And my bumb/tail bone pretty much aches all day long from living life sitting down. And all the muscles and joints in my arms are sore from supporting my 180 lb pregnant self on cruches, but like I said things are looking up.
In the mean time I am learning to relish the little things I can do like get myself dressed. I even made my bed this morning. I crawled on my hands and knees and it took me 20 minutes but I did it. Plus, I have plenty of time for snuggles. I used to dread hearing Bracken's little footsteps on the kitchen floor at all hours of the morning, but now I love it because it means I get some serious snuggle time before his day takes off. Having Curtis pamper me and cater to my every need has been enjoyable too. With my new sleeker cast I can now wear my regular pants and not just sweat pants. So, yes, things are improving.
There is no denying that this unfortunate injury has been a major set back for our family. When is something like this ever convenient? It dampened our Holidays, but at the same time Curtis was on break and available to step up to the task at hand. It has thrown a kink in our home improvement plans for the break as well as pushed our "get ready for baby" timeline back several notches. Our lives will be barely back to normal and it will be time for baby #3 to bless our home. But we are alive, healthy and together. And that's what is most important.

Farm Boys
Nathan and Bracken have been on some grand adventures with Tia Marci. Nathan made sure we packed his cowboy boots because he knew there would be lost of opportunity to wear them in Malad. And he was right.
Bracken as always loved horses from a distance and he finally got a chance to experience them up close and personal. He loved riding the horses.
Nathan even helped Tia Marci catch and saddle the horse. He had to stand in front of the gate to stop the horse from running out which he was a bit nervous about but Tia Marci said he was really brave and stood his ground. Then he had to hold the reigns to keep the horse still while Tia Marci saddled the horse. He tried really hard but there is not a whole lot a 4 year old can do compared to the strenghth of a grown horse in search of fresh grass. Needless to say he was yanked around abit.
They also got to visit a farm and see baby cows. Nathan had the chance to experience some real farm work. He helped drive the fork lift to cary the bail of hay out to the cows, put oats and hay in the troughs, and he even tasted some of the cows oats. He later mentioned that his boots were dirty and his hands smelled like hay.
His hard work was rewarded with chicken strips and french fries from the Dude Ranch Restaurant. Nathan is pretty sure farmers live the life.

Another Mishap
It looks like Bracky and Mommy are matchy matchy now.
Bracken and Nathan are currently on a little adventure in Idaho with Grandma and Grandpa King and on his first morning there he jumped off a bed and landed funny. He limped around the rest of the day, but the next morning he wouldn't walk on it at all. Grandpa took him in to the local clinic and had him checked out. As it turns out the poor little guy fractured his tibia. Luckily his injury is not nearly as bad as mine, he can hobble around on his splint, and he rides a trike all over Grandma's house like an electric scooter. It hasn't slowed him down much.
We would like to think that this is the end of our run with bad luck in the medical department, but who knows. We just have to take it one day at a time.

Dancing Queens
My boys love to get their boogie on. They have several songs that are favorites, Party Rock Anthem being number one on the list. They request that song all the time, and Bracken has been known to randomly shout out "Party Rock!" when he is happy and excited about life.
This particular occasion was unique. They usually dance to music on the computer, but this time they each had an mp3 player with headphones. It was hilarious to see them dancing full out, but to completely seperate beats.
